The Hair You Save May Be Your Own – Here’s How
Does this sound familiar? Split ends. Over processed. Excessive breakage. Fried dry hair. Any and all can result in a long string of bad hair days. Each produces tresses we don’t want. That no one wants. All require different hair repair strategies. Do you know what to do to remedy these four evil sisters that rob us of the hair we deserve?
If not let’s look at four common problems and what you can do to fix or avoid them to begin with.
Your Mission: Prevent Split Ends
Subject your hair to things that destroy the protective cuticle and you’ve got a recipe for split ends. Left unattended the splits readily travel from the end up the shaft. Resulting in severely damaged hair. The solution? There’s only one. Cut your losses. You got it. You have to trim your hair, usually a half inch beyond the damage to solve the problem. As preventative then lightly trim your tips every six to eight weeks thereafter.
Your Mission: Minimize Breakage
Yes hair breaks. All the more so if your favorite styling option is a tightly pulled back pony tail. Or you fail to condition after every shower. Or you have no silicone based serums to keep your locks smooth and glossy. Any of which can leave you with hair that is frail and more likely to fracture. The whole idea here is to keep hair strong, your cuticles smooth and to not do dumb things that promote breakage. Got it?
Your Mission: Be Cautious With Heat
Excessive heat hurts hair. Styling tools exceeding 212 degrees F can cause the water inside your strands to boil. With no way out the steam rips at the hair. Leaving a tattered cuticle in its wake. Not a pretty picture. I’m not saying you need to banish hot styling tools. Just be sure to use heat protectants on your hair that can stand between it and the hot surfaces. It’s also unwise to blow dry hair that is sopping wet. And while you’re at it dial down the heat on those mega watt hair dryers to avoid fried strands.
Your Mission: Use Chemicals Carefully
Color treatments, relaxing or adding curls typically involve chemicals that can wreck havoc on your hair. Leaving it brittle, coarse and weak. Not to mention prone to frizz. Given the ways chemicals can alter your hair’s underlying structure you need to pamper it afterwards. Doing things like deep conditioning to hydrate and soften. Using styling products loaded with protein. And remembering to give your hair at least four months between processing sessions.
Yes traumatized tresses can be saved. Or the problems can be avoided in the first place. Simply by being wise about getting regular trims, in the application of heat, and treating your hair like a fine silk blouse you can minimize the damage you do. Apply those common sense ideas and you too can ban bad hair days from your life.
